DFS Exposure Caps: The Portfolio Discipline That Prevents Bust Weeks
Exposure caps are the portfolio-construction discipline that separates winning multi-entry GPP players from catastrophe-prone ones. Cap per-player exposure at ~35%, per-stack at ~20%, and per-team at ~25%. A single player's late scratch or a single team's blowout should never shred more than a third of your portfolio — and exposure caps are how you enforce that at construction time rather than after the fact.
Casual multi-entry DFS players usually skip exposure caps because they don't feel necessary — until the week when their favorite quarterback gets ruled out 45 minutes before kickoff and 16 of 20 lineups start with a zero. This piece walks through what exposure caps actually do, why the industry defaults exist, and when to tune them.
The per-player cap
The most important cap. A per-player exposure cap says: no more than N% of your lineups can roster this specific player. Set at 35% by default. At 35% cap on 20 lineups, any single player appears in at most 7 lineups. If that player fails (injury, blowout, coach's decision to rest), 13 of your 20 lineups are unaffected.
A 90% player-exposure lineup carries 90% correlation to a single injury event. A 35%-capped lineup carries at most 35%. Same projection, same construction skill; a 55-point swing in worst-case portfolio outcome.
The per-stack cap
The second-most important cap. A stack (QB + WR + bring-back in NFL, top line in NHL, 5-batter team stack in MLB) is a correlated grouping — when it works, every player in the stack scores well; when it busts, every player in the stack busts. Uncapped stack exposure means one game-script failure cratering a significant portion of your portfolio.
Industry default: 20% per game-stack. On 20 lineups, at most 4 lineups share the same 3-player stack. If the game plays to a defensive slog and the stack scores 3 points combined, 16 of 20 lineups still have their independent stacks to work with.
The per-team cap
Third-tier cap. Distinct from the per-stack cap because it counts ALL players from a team, not just the stacked ones. A team's bye week or COVID outbreak or coaching-change chaos can invalidate every player projection on the roster, stacked or not. Cap total team exposure at 25% — no more than 5 of 20 lineups have meaningful production dependent on the same team.
How DFS Degen enforces caps
Exposure caps are set in the simulation configuration and enforced by the optimizer at lineup generation. The simulator generates lineups in ranked-EV order, tracks cumulative exposure across the portfolio, and skips candidate lineups that would push any cap over its limit.
The result is a portfolio where the top-EV lineups are selected UP TO their cap ceilings, then subsequent lineups substitute the next-best alternatives at each capped slot. The overall portfolio EV drops slightly from the uncapped maximum — that's the cost of insurance against catastrophic worst-case outcomes.
When to tune caps up or down
- Loosen to 45-50% player cap when a player is clearly under-projected by the field, has no injury risk, and the matchup fundamentals are strong. High-confidence plays deserve higher exposure.
- Tighten to 20-25% player cap when a player has any questionable / probable injury tag or the slate is early enough in the week that late news could materially change their status.
- Tighten stack cap to 12-15% in especially unpredictable games (weather-affected, huge spreads, key player uncertainty on either side).
- Leave team cap at 25% almost always. Team-wide failure events (blowouts, COVID outbreaks) are rare enough that tightening further loses more EV than it protects against.
Exposure caps + late-swap
Late-swap and exposure caps interact usefully. If your pre-slate portfolio was capped correctly and news breaks against a player you had at 30% exposure, late-swap lets you shave that exposure further on the swappable subset — reducing damage below the cap without wholesale rebuild.
