Weather in DFS: When It Actually Matters and When It's Noise
Weather in DFS matters in exactly three sports — MLB, NFL, and PGA — and is noise in every other. Where it matters, it's a first-class projection input worth tracking on slate day. Where it doesn't, spending time on weather reports is a distraction from decisions that actually affect your lineup's expected value.
Weather is one of the more misunderstood DFS inputs. Casual players either ignore it entirely OR overweight it into every projection. The honest answer is narrower: three sports where forecasts change lineups meaningfully, specific conditions within those sports that matter, and everything else that's just conversation.
NFL: wind, cold, and rain
Wind is the largest NFL weather variable. At 15+ mph sustained, passing efficiency drops roughly 8-12% — quarterbacks throw shorter and more conservatively, deep passing yardage compresses, and running back workload increases. At 25+ mph, quarterbacks routinely miss ceiling by 30% and games skew toward extreme rushing volume.
Wind above 20 mph in an outdoor NFL game is one of the few single-variable projection shifts large enough to unilaterally change your lineup construction. Fade the QB-WR stack; lean into the two-RB build.
Cold matters mostly for kickers (below 20°F, field goal accuracy drops noticeably beyond 40 yards) and secondarily for passing games (hand-warmth affects grip). Rain compresses total scoring but the effect is smaller than wind — a rainy game with low wind still passes normally.
MLB: wind direction is stack fuel
Baseball offense is heavily park-dependent, and wind direction modifies park factors dramatically. The specific setups that create GPP leverage:
- Wrigley Field with wind out to left: right-handed pull hitters gain enormous HR variance. Stack the visiting team's righties.
- Wrigley Field with wind out to right: same math for left-handed pull hitters. Stack accordingly.
- Coors Field on warm days: already the most hitter-friendly park in baseball; a 25°C+ afternoon adds ~5% to game totals on top of the baseline park effect. Stack heavily.
- Yankee Stadium with wind out to right: the short right-field porch already generates HR volume; wind out amplifies it further.
Rain-affected games are the opposite: a delay or shortened game caps every player's ceiling. Fade rain-risk games entirely in cash; consider skipping them in GPPs unless the Vegas total holds firm despite the risk.
PGA: wind as a projection multiplier
Golf DFS is uniquely wind-sensitive because the entire tournament plays outdoors over four days. High-wind days favor ball-strikers who flight the ball down (typically shorter, more accurate golfers) over high-launch bombers. Same golfer on a calm day versus a 20+ mph day can produce materially different expected scoring.
Tee-time correlation is a specific PGA DFS edge that weather creates. Coastal setups where afternoon wind is forecast to intensify make morning tee times structurally favorable — golfers sharing an early wave share the favorable weather window, and their scores correlate. Where weather is noise
NBA, NHL, WNBA, and every indoor esports title are weather- independent. Spending slate-prep time on weather for these sports is a distraction — the same time invested on rotation reads (NBA/WNBA) or line correlation (NHL) or matchup-specific matchup reads (esports) has vastly higher ROI.
Practical workflow for weather-sensitive slates
- MLB: check hourly rain probability at each ballpark (rain-delay risk) and wind direction at hitter-friendly parks (stack fuel). Adjust projections in the DFS Simulator edit column.
- NFL: check wind (mph and gust) at outdoor stadiums. Any game with sustained 15+ mph wind gets its QB projections knocked ~10%; any game with 25+ mph gets a rushing-lean construction preference.
- PGA: check wind forecast for each tee-time window; note where afternoon wind is expected to intensify. Stack early tee times in those cases.
- Re-run the correlated Monte Carlo with weather-adjusted projections. The ceiling and floor columns update accordingly.
