Why road courses reward different drivers
Braking + turn-in skill
Road courses require driving from cornering skill — heavy braking into corners, precise turn-in points, smooth throttle application on exit. Formula racing and sports car backgrounds correlate strongly with this skill. Oval-only Cup racers who never trained on road courses can struggle to find pace.
Tire management
Road courses are much harder on tires than ovals. Braking zones + hard cornering degrade tires 20-30% faster. Drivers who can manage tire life while maintaining pace have a real advantage. This is a learned skill that oval-only drivers lack.
Passing difficulty

Standard NASCAR DFS scoring pays place-differential: each position gained from start to finish adds points. On ovals, back-of-grid drivers can move up 15-20 spots via pit strategy + pace. On road courses:
- Passing is harder — back-of-grid drivers move up only 5-10 spots on average.
- Front-of-grid drivers typically stay near the front — less place-differential downside for them.

Cash games

GPPs
Mix front-of-grid specialists with 1-2 cross-series or mid-grid pace-havers at low ownership. The cross-series driver is the differentiator; the specialists provide baseline floor.
