DFS Position Eligibility: Why FLEX Slots Change Everything About Optimization
Multi-position eligibility and FLEX slots are the most underappreciated construction levers in DFS. A player eligible at two positions lets the optimizer unlock $500-$1,500 in salary flexibility per slate; a FLEX slot lets you take the best remaining option regardless of position type. Neither shows up on a per-player projection column, but both shift the shape of what an optimal lineup can look like.
Casual DFS players build lineups the way they build fantasy football lineups from decades ago — pick the best QB, then the best RB, then the best WR. That workflow ignores the two structural features that distinguish modern DFS: FLEX/UTIL slots that accept multiple position types, and multi-position eligibility that lets a single player fill any of the slots they qualify for. FLEX slots by sport
Every major DFS site includes at least one FLEX-style roster slot per sport. The specific accepted positions vary by site.
NFL DFS FLEX
- DraftKings Classic: 1 FLEX slot accepting RB / WR / TE. Roster is QB + 2 RB + 3 WR + 1 TE + 1 FLEX + 1 DST = 9 slots.
- FanDuel Classic: No traditional FLEX; uses a strict positional roster (QB + 2 RB + 3 WR + 1 TE + 1 K + 1 DEF = 9 slots). The absence of FLEX is why FanDuel NFL lineups often look different from DraftKings lineups on the same slate.
NBA DFS UTIL
- DraftKings Classic: 3 UTIL slots (each accepts any position). Roster is PG + SG + SF + PF + C + 3 UTIL = 8 slots.
- FanDuel Classic: Simplified position shape (PG + PG + SG + SG + SF + SF + PF + PF + C = 9 slots). No UTIL; the doubled positions provide the flexibility instead.
MLB DFS UTIL
- DraftKings Classic: 2 SP + 1 C + 1 1B + 1 2B + 1 3B + 1 SS + 3 OF = 10 slots (no UTIL).
- FanDuel Classic: 1 P + 1 C/1B + 1 2B + 1 3B + 1 SS + 3 OF + 1 UTIL = 9 slots. FanDuel's UTIL accepts any hitter position.
Multi-position eligibility
Beyond FLEX slots, individual PLAYERS often qualify at multiple positions. This isn't the same as FLEX — a multi-eligible player can slot into any position they qualify for, giving the optimizer additional degrees of freedom.
In DraftKings NBA, position eligibility is generous — players who occasionally play a second position pick up that eligibility for DFS purposes. A shooting guard who starts 20% of games at small forward will typically appear as "SG/SF" on the DK salary sheet. That player can fill an SG, SF, or UTIL slot, depending on what your lineup needs.
Two players at the same projected score and salary are NOT equivalent if one has single-position eligibility and the other has multi-position eligibility. The multi- eligible player is worth 1-2 additional lineup-optimizer points.
The salary-cap unlock math
Concrete example. NBA DK slate, $50,000 cap, 8 slots. You want to roster:
- Star PG at $10.5k (projects 48 pts)
- Star C at $9.8k (projects 44 pts)
- Star SG at $9.2k (projects 42 pts)
Total on the three stars: $29.5k, leaving $20.5k for the remaining 5 slots (SF, PF, and 3 UTIL). If your best remaining SF pick is $6.8k projecting 32 pts and your best PF pick is $6.5k projecting 30 pts, you've committed $42.8k on 5 slots and have $7.2k for 3 UTIL players. That's $2.4k/UTIL average — likely cheap-punt tier.
Now replace the SF with a $5.9k SG/SF-eligible player projecting 28 pts. You slot them into SF. That saves $900. Now your 5-slot commitment drops to $41.9k, and the UTIL budget rises to $8.1k — an extra $300/UTIL. At 1.75 fantasy points per $100 in the value tier, that $900 conversion is worth roughly 5 additional fantasy points across your UTIL slots, at the cost of 4 fantasy points on the SF slot itself. Net: +1 fantasy point.
One point sounds small — but multiplied across every multi-eligible option you find in a slate, this adds up to 2-4 fantasy points of optimizer edge. Over 100 lineups, that's a real portfolio-wide upgrade.
Where DK and FD diverge on eligibility
DraftKings assigns broader multi-position eligibility than FanDuel across most sports. Two implications:
- DK lineups have more construction flexibility.A player listed as SG/SF/PF on DK might be C-only on FD. This is one reason optimal DK and FD lineups from the same slate look different even when projections are identical.
- DK optimizer values multi-eligible players higher than raw projection suggests. An SG/SF player projecting 24 points is worth more to the DK optimizer than the same-projected single-eligible SG because the multi-eligibility slots elsewhere in the build.

Ownership leverage from multi-eligibility
Ownership on multi-eligible players usually tracks their raw projection, not their lineup-construction utility. This creates a systematic edge: a multi-eligible player at 12% projected ownership might be worth 15% in optimal construction, which means the field is underowning them relative to their real GPP contribution.
Sharp construction: on any slate where 2-3 quality multi- eligible options exist at moderate ownership, use one as a lineup anchor across your GPP portfolio. Their flexibility unlocks salary that lets the top of your roster absorb premium pricing without punting the middle.
How the simulator handles multi-eligibility
DFS Degen's eligibility resolver checks each player against every roster slot they could fill. A SG/SF-eligible player at $5.9k gets considered for the SG slot, the SF slot, AND every UTIL slot — the optimizer picks the assignment that produces the highest projected lineup score under the salary cap.
Manual lineup construction misses these interactions because humans build one slot at a time. Simulator optimization considers all slot assignments jointly, which is why running the sim on multi-eligible-rich slates consistently outperforms hand-building.
Common pitfalls
Assuming eligibility carries over slates
NBA position eligibility updates weekly based on the prior 20-day rotation history. A player who was eligible as SG/SF three weeks ago may have lost the SF eligibility this week if their coach shifted them exclusively to SG. Always check the current slate's salary CSV rather than trusting last week's eligibility memory.
Not exploiting late-week eligibility gains
The opposite scenario: a player who picks up a new eligibility (adds SF to their existing SG) mid-week represents a construction unlock the field hasn't fully priced in. Watch for eligibility CHANGES between the season-open CSV and current-week CSV.
Using multi-eligibility on cash construction
In cash games, multi-eligibility matters less because the floor-optimization workflow doesn't depend on the marginal salary savings — cash lineups pack the best- floor options and don't optimize as hard against the cap. Save multi-eligibility construction focus for GPPs where the marginal optimizer edge translates to top-1% probability gains.
Construction workflow
- On the current slate's salary CSV, identify every multi-eligible player. Flag them.
- Compute value ratio (projected points ÷ salary in $1k) for each. Multi-eligible players at 4.5+ pts/$1k are construction gold.
- Build your first pass optimizing raw projection. Then swap in multi-eligible players wherever a same-tier option exists — the optimizer finds savings you can redeploy on premium plays.
- For GPPs, target the multi-eligible players sitting at moderate ownership (10-18%). Their marginal-value contribution isn't priced into the field ownership.
- Skip this workflow for cash games. Floor optimization doesn't reward the marginal cap savings enough to justify the added complexity.
