DraftKings Tiers Format Strategy: The No-Salary DFS Contest Explained
DraftKings Tiers is a no-salary DFS format that strips away the primary constraint of classic DFS. You pick one player per tier bracket from 6-9 salary buckets, and every combination is legal. That makes projection quality the entire game — you can't hide a bad projection behind a salary discount. Correlation math still applies; the tier structure just changes how construction navigates it.
Tiers gets overlooked by most DFS content because it's DraftKings-only and runs on a narrower slate schedule than classic salary-cap. But for players comfortable with the format, Tiers is one of the sharpest surfaces available — the format concentrates decision weight on projection judgement in a way classic doesn't.
The Tiers format structure
A typical NBA Tiers slate has 8 brackets, roughly Tier A through Tier H:
- Tier A — highest-projected superstars ($10k+ in classic equivalents).
- Tier B — high-projected stars ($8k-$10k).
- Tier C — solid mid-tier plays ($7k-$8k).
- Tier D — value mid-range ($6k-$7k).
- Tier E — mid-range depth ($5k-$6k).
- Tier F — low-mid ($4k-$5k).
- Tier G — punt-adjacent ($3.5k-$4k).
- Tier H — minimum-salary punts.
Your job: pick one player from each tier. Total roster of 8 players; no salary math to solve.
Why projection quality matters more in Tiers
In classic DFS, salary-cap optimization creates a natural "value" sort — you can afford a $9,000 star OR two $4,500 mid-tiers, and both paths solve constraints. A bad projection on a $9,000 star gets partially masked when the two $4,500 picks over-perform to compensate.
In Tiers, there's no substitution possible. If your Tier A pick projects for 45 fantasy points but scores 30, you lose the delta directly. Every projection error translates 1:1 into lineup shortfall — projection quality is the entire game.
Correlation still matters
Even without salary constraints, correlation still drives the joint distribution of your roster. A QB in Tier A (say Josh Allen) + a WR in Tier D (his WR2 in a slot role) scores higher in the joint distribution than two uncorrelated picks at the same mean projections. Sharp Tiers construction identifies correlated pairs across tier boundaries — a QB in Tier B and his WR in Tier E is a legitimate stack, same as it would be in classic salary-cap DFS.
Ownership dynamics in Tiers
The tier structure concentrates ownership on the "obvious best player" per bracket. In classic DFS, salary spread across a bracket creates ownership distribution across multiple players; in Tiers, everyone is comparing the same 5-8 candidates per bracket and settling on the highest projection. Ownership on the chalk pick per tier can exceed 50%.
That creates leverage opportunities. A contrarian Tier B pick (not the obvious best) at 10-15% ownership captures significant leverage if it hits. GPP-winning Tiers lineups usually feature 2-3 contrarian tier picks in the mid-brackets.
Roster construction for Tiers GPPs
- Take the obvious chalk pick in Tiers A and H (the highest-priced stars are worth their projection; punts matter less at the low end).
- Layer contrarian picks in mid-brackets (Tier B, C, D) — mid-tier players where the field converges on the obvious pick and leverage exists.
- Enforce correlated construction — a Tier A QB should have a Tier D or E WR from the same team.
- Diversify across multi-entry portfolios — same discipline as classic multi-entry.
