NHL DFS goalies have zero redundancy — one goalie per team, no fill-in from a bench spot. That structural constraint plus scoring that compounds wins + shots + saves makes goalie selection the highest-leverage single decision in the sport. Get the goalie right and your lineup's floor jumps 5-8 DK points. Get it wrong and no skater upside compensates.

NHL DFS content covers stacking (line stacks and power-play stacks) more than any other decision. Goalie selection gets much less attention because the position feels binary — you pick the top goalie, you take chalk, you move on. That's the wrong framing. Goalie selection is a leverage decision like every other GPP decision, and it has more available edge than skater selection because fewer players are analyzing it deeply.

The scoring math

DraftKings NHL goalie scoring rewards volume + wins:

  • 6 points per win
  • 0.7 points per save
  • 0.2 points per shot against (yes, shots that were goals still count for the shots-against bonus)
  • −0.5 points per goal allowed
  • +5 shutout bonus

Applied to a typical starting-goalie line: 35 shots faced, 33 saves, 2 goals allowed, win. Score = 6 (win) + 0.7 × 33 (saves) + 0.2 × 35 (shots) + −0.5 × 2 (goals) = 6 + 23.1 + 7 − 1 = 35.1 DK points. That's a top-3 fantasy score on any NHL slate.

Same goalie loses: 6 (no win) + 0.7 × 30 (fewer saves, game gets away) + 0.2 × 34 + −0.5 × 4 = 0 + 21 + 6.8 − 2 = 25.8. Losing goalies still score, but the delta is real — 10 DK points from the win bonus alone.

The single most predictive input for NHL goalie DFS scoring is not save percentage or GAA — it's the interaction of TEAM win probability × opposing team's SHOTS-PER-GAME rate.

The two-input framework

1. Team win probability

Vegas moneylines translate directly to implied win probability. A −180 favorite is ~64% implied win; a −250 favorite is ~71%; a −350 favorite is ~78%. Wins provide 6 base DK points — the fastest way to add floor to a goalie's projection.

Sweet spot for GPP goalie selection: 55-65% implied win probability. Too far above (−350+ favorites) and the goalie draws chalk ownership. Too far below (dogs at 30% implied) and the expected value doesn't justify the roster spot even at low ownership. 55-65% is where real leverage exists — the win is likely, ownership sits moderate, upside exists.

2. Opposing team shots-per-game

Shots faced × 0.9 = saves (assuming league-average .900 save percentage), and shots + saves account for most of the goalie's DK score. A goalie facing a team that averages 32 shots/game has meaningfully more scoring upside than a goalie facing a team that averages 26 shots/game.

Bottom-of-league shot rates: 24-27 shots per game (some Western teams historically). Top-of-league: 32-36 shots per game. That's a 30% delta in the biggest contributor to goalie scoring — apply it to your slate filter.

Chalk vs leverage goalie decisions

The top-projected goalie of the day typically draws 30-40% ownership. In cash games, take the chalk — the projection is real, and cash math rewards the mean + floor of a workhorse workload + likely win.

In GPPs, the leverage angle: the 2nd or 3rd goalie in projected points, often at 12-20% ownership, provides 90-95% of the chalk's expected score at a fraction of the ownership. The 8-DK-point delta between chalk and leverage doesn't justify the 20-percentage- point ownership premium in a large-field GPP.

The DK 2-goalie problem

DraftKings requires 2 G. Most casual entrants pay up for one chalk workhorse and fill the second slot with a punt-price goalie without checking projection. That's exactly the leak — the second G slot should still hit the framework thresholds (55%+ implied win, 30+ opposing shots/game).

Concrete: if chalk G1 is $8.5k projecting 24 DK points at 34% ownership, and G2 candidate at $7.2k projects 18 DK points at 10% ownership, that's a legitimate second-slot pick. Punt-priced G ($5k or under) rarely projects above 12 DK points and drags the lineup mean significantly.

Stacking with your own goalie

The single strongest positive-correlation stack in NHL DFS is your goalie + 2-3 skaters from his own team. The logic: team wins → goalie earns the 6-point win bonus AND skaters score in a favorable game flow → both sides of your roster hit their upside together.

Never pair your goalie with any skater from the OPPOSING team. Every opposing-team goal simultaneously subtracts from your goalie's score (−0.5) and adds to your opposing skater's score. You cannot win both — the correlation is strongly negative.

Back-to-back and rest-advantage angles

NHL teams playing the second night of back-to-backs are typically favored to lose (the traveling team has less rest). Field ownership fades second-night starters aggressively. But if you know the second-night starter is actually starting (confirmed pre-lock), and the implied win probability isn't too far below 45%, the ownership discount can be real value.

Rest-advantage plays go the other way — a team playing at home after 2+ days rest against a team on second night of back-to-back has meaningfully elevated win probability. Vegas prices some of this in but not all.

Construction checklist

  1. Rank slate goalies by implied win probability × opposing shots-per-game rate.
  2. Note ownership projections. Chalk = 30%+ owned; leverage = 8-20%; punt = 3-7%.
  3. For cash: take the chalk workhorse. Pay up.
  4. For GPPs: identify the leverage goalie — 2nd-3rd projected at <20% ownership. Consider as primary G over chalk.
  5. Stack your goalie with 2-3 own-team skaters (line stack + power-play stack). Never stack opposing skaters.
  6. DK secondary G: hit the framework thresholds. Avoid punt-price ($5k or under) unless the play clears both win probability and shot volume tests.
