NHL DFS power-play stacking is the sharpest single- team correlation shape in the sport. PP1 skaters share ice time, shots on goal, and goal-scoring events at a level no other DFS stack can match. When the power play converts, all 5 stacked players score together — the correlation multiplier is enormous. Understanding how to identify PP1 units and stack them properly is fundamental NHL DFS construction.
NHL DFS scoring is heavily correlated within teams — specifically within the PP1 unit. When a team scores on the power play, three positive events happen simultaneously: the goal scorer gets +3 DK points, the primary assist gets +2 points, the secondary assist gets +2 points. All three players are on your stack if you PP-stacked correctly. Add shot-on-goal bonuses and it's a compound scoring event.
What PP1 actually is
Every NHL team runs 2 power-play units. PP1 is the primary unit — usually the team's best 5-skater combination for special teams:
- 3 forwards (typically top-6 forwards with playmaking + finishing skill)
- 2 defensemen (typically the best puck-moving offensive D)
- 1 goalie (their own; opponent has 5 skaters)
PP1 gets 60-70% of the team's total power-play ice time; PP2 gets the remaining 30-40%. This means PP1 skaters accumulate massive PP ice time — a top team's PP1 forward might play 3-4 PP minutes per game, all of which count toward the DFS PP time bonus.

Consider a PP1 goal:
- Goal scorer: +3 DK points (goal)
- Primary assist: +2 DK points (assist)
- Secondary assist: +2 DK points (assist)
- All 5 PP1 skaters: +0.5 DK points each (power-play point bonus)
- Total from one PP goal: ~10 DK points distributed across 3 named scorers + 2 point bonuses
A stack of the PP1 forwards (goal scorer + 2 assists) + 2 PP1 defensemen captures the full 10 DK points from a single PP goal. If your team scores 2 PP goals in a game, that's 20 DK points concentrated on your stack. Line-only stacks can't match this density.
PP1 correlation is the strongest positive-correlation stack shape in DFS. When it fires, it's the highest-density scoring event you can concentrate on a lineup.
Identifying PP1 units
NHL teams announce PP unit compositions before games. Reliable sources:
- Team beat writers. Each team's beat writer posts pre-game line rushes and PP unit groupings 30-60 minutes before puck drop.
- DailyFaceoff.com. Publishes projected lines and PP unit combinations for every team.
- Historical stability. PP1 units don't shuffle often. Look at the last 10 games — the same 5 skaters typically start the PP.
Injury impact: a top PP1 skater going out reshuffles the unit. A backup wing takes over; the PP loses some effectiveness. Sharp construction: fade a team's PP1 stack when a key PP1 skater is out.
Best PP1 team-specific dynamics
Not every PP1 is equally exploitable. Look for:
- High conversion rate. Teams converting 25%+ on PP have real skill; teams below 18% aren't reliable stack candidates.
- Opposing team penalty rate. Your PP only converts if your team gets PP time. Match against high-penalty-taking teams.
- Home ice. Home PPs typically convert slightly better due to crowd support and referee dynamics.
Common PP-stacking mistakes
Confusing PP1 with the top 5-on-5 line
A team's top scoring line doesn't always match their PP1 unit. Some coaches deploy specialists on PP1 who don't play top-6 5-on-5 minutes. Verify PP1 composition rather than assuming it's the top line.
Stacking too many PP2 skaters
PP2 gets 30-40% of PP time; PP1 gets 60-70%. Stacking PP2 members captures much less correlation than PP1 because they play less PP time. Focus on PP1 first.
Not verifying at lock
Late-arriving injury news can shuffle PP units. A confirmed PP1 skater downgrade means the unit reshuffles; your projection assumptions change.

Cash games
PP1 stacks work in cash too, though with more limited depth. Roster 2-3 PP1 skaters from a top-conversion team facing a high-penalty opponent. Skip the full 5-player PP1 stack in cash — variance is too high for cash-game math.
GPPs
Full 5-player PP1 stack (3 forwards + 2 defensemen) is the classic NHL GPP shape when the setup is right. Ownership on PP1 stacks concentrates on the obvious top teams; leverage angles exist on second-tier PP1 stacks with real matchup advantages.
Construction checklist
- Identify top-conversion PP teams on the slate (25%+ PP rate season-to-date).
- Check opposing team's penalty rate. High- penalty opponents create PP time.
- Verify PP1 unit composition via beat writers or DailyFaceoff.
- Stack 3 PP1 forwards + 2 PP1 defensemen for full correlation capture.
- Verify at lock for injury-driven unit shuffles.
